Wigan boss Steve Bruce sees no reason why the Latics cannot qualify for Europe.

Wigan rekindled their hopes of a place in UEFA's new Europa League with Saturday's 2-1 win at Sunderland, elevating them to eighth in the Barclays Premier League.

With seventh place likely to be the cut-off, Bruce commented: "I have said it before, Bolton and Blackburn have got into Europe - nobody fancied them. Why not?"

He added: "It would be terrific to bring European football to the club, an unbelievable achievement when you think how far Wigan have come since 1978 when they were still playing non-league football."

Appreciating the added problems playing in Europe brings, Bruce added: "How we would cope with it is another matter.

"If Tottenham and Aston Villa can't cope with the amount of games, then I'm not so sure we would.

"But to be in there with a chance with nine games to go is terrific because at this time last season we were really twitching."
