Alexandre Pato appeared to be in the process of getting his career back on track at Villarreal during the opening months of the season. The Brazilian forward, who was expected to become one of the world’s best players after bursting on the scene with Internacional in 2006, failed to impress on loan at Chelsea last season but still managed to seal a surprise move to the Estadio de la Cerámica last summer.Pato showed glimpses of his quality with the Yellow Submarine during the opening months of the campaign. Okay, so he only managed to score six goals in 24 matches, but he didn’t look out of his depth. His link-up play with his teammates, in particular, was very encouraging. It was a surprise, then, when Villarreal allowed Pato to leave for the Chinese club Tianjin Quanjian at the end of January. The Spanish outfit accepted a £15.4 million offer and Pato was sent packing to the Chinese Super League.

Tough start to life in China for Pato

Tianjin are managed by the legendary Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro and have no other notable players, with the exception of Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel.

They played their second match of the Chinese Super League season against Carlos Tevez’s Shanghai Shenhua earlier today and Pato was presented with a golden opportunity to earn his side all three points from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

Giovanni Moreno had put the home side 1-0 up in the 75th minute but Witsel levelled the scores 10 minutes later.
