Conor McGregor is still the reigning UFC lightweight champion after the much hyped Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov fight at UFC 209 fell through.

Both men obviously want a crack at the champion and the easiest way to get to him would have been to claim the interim belt by winning that match.

After The Eagle didn’t make weight, the entire fight was shuttered, which leaves the question of who will be the next UFC fighter to face the champ unanswered.

The entire sport seems to be waiting for Notorious to get his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather out of the way before they can truly move forward.

He’s been in various gyms getting his boxing technique together for an eventual bout with the retired champion and the agreement to actually hash this long-running beef out looks near completion.

A prospective fight with Money Mayweather would present the first time in a long time that the lightweight champion would be facing a fighter with as much movement skill and striking precision in any arena.

Joe Rogan said the same of McGregor on The Joe Rogan Experience this week and praised his work with movement coach Ido Portal as a big part of his success.

He said: “Look at what’s going on with Conor McGregor and that Ido Portal guy. He’s concentrating so much on movement. And movement is such a huge factor in his success. Because, his ability to dictate where, first of all, his ability to move in and out is almost better than anybody’s.

“His ability to get out of the way and his ability to move in close and move like a f**king snake like he’s on the outside and then boom, he’s in And he’s in before you know it. These complicated sort of tricky moves to try and time and follow, he’s a very difficult guy to try and time.”

Many competitors have found themselves on the business end of Notorious’ punishing strikes and lost because of the precision in those punches.

Eddie Alvarez and Jose Aldo, former lightweight and featherweight champion respectively, fell victim to that ability to slither in for a devastating blow in meetings with him.

Owen Roddy has done a magnificent job getting that striking ability up to an unparalleled level in the sport, but movement is just as important to his overall success.

McGregor is going to need to take full advantage of his sneaky style of dealing shots if he’s going to emerge victorious against a boxing legend.
