Paul Merson has become renowned for his constant mispronouncing of footballers on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday. In truth, it’s a little bit cringeworthy how the Arsenal legend struggles to say the names of players that every football fan in Britain knows how to say. But, on Saturday, it was the nickname he produced for Manchester City’s Leroy Sane rather than his mispronunciation. The pundits on Soccer Saturday were analysing the impressive performances of the 21-year-old German when Merson said: “That’s a great finish by bacon,” when looking at Sane’s goal against Sunderland last weekend. After a few seconds of silence, Jeff Stelling asked “bacon?” before Merson explained “bacon sarnie”.

Merson's nickname for Sane

In truth, it’s a pretty cringeworthy nickname but there were plenty of football fans absolutely loving it on Twitter. So who are we to be the fun police and stop them from laughing at Merson’s joke?

Twitter was loving it

Take a look at their reaction:

In all seriousness, though, Sane has been in impressive form recently and has established himself as an important member of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Sane continued that form in the FA Cup against Middlesbrough on Saturday lunchtime as City eased into the semi-final with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

Their attentions now turn to the Champions League where they will attempt to defend their 5-3 lead against Monaco from the first-leg.

Guardiola will be hoping that his side don’t make a ‘pig’s ear’ of it with Leroy ‘bacon’ Sane in their side…
