After matches rarely does the main highlight involve a tackle from a defender, rather than a great goal or a fantastic piece of skill.

However, during Bayern Munich’s 3-0 victory over Frankfurt on Saturday afternoon, it was a goal-saving tackle from Mats Hummels that was doing the rounds on social media - instead of Roberto Lewandowski’s brace or Douglas Costa’s strike.

With the scores still at 0-0, Branimir Hrgota broke the offside trap and rounded goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. It looked as though he was about the give the visitors a surprise lead at the Allianz Arena but Hummels had other ideas.

Not known for his pace, Hummels sprinted back and somehow prevented Hrgota from scoring.

It proved to be vital as Bayern went on to win comfortably to take a giant step towards yet another Bundesliga title.

And after the match, Hummels was asked about that challenge and had no intention of playing it down.

He said: "I don't need to be modest, I liked that tackle. For us defenders, it's like scoring a goal."

Fair play.

Things are going very well indeed for Hummels and Bayern at the moment.

Their 3-0 victory, coupled with RB Leipzig’s defeat at home to Wolfsburg on Saturday saw them extend their lead at the top of the table to 10 points.

It comes in the same week as they demolished Arsenal 10-2 on aggregate to progress into the last-eight of the Champions League.

They’re also into the last-four of the DFB-Pokal cup and a treble is very much on the cards.

With Hummels in this kind of form in defence, you wouldn’t bet against them winning the lot.
