Back in January, it appeared to be touch and go whether Javier Hernandez would still be a Bayer Leverkusen player by the end of the winter transfer window.

German newspaper Bild claimed that Bayer were ready to sell the Mexico international following a barren spell without a goal which stretched 15 matches.

Moreover, it was reported that Chicharito’s reputation at the BayArena had deteriorated, with his lack of contribution to general play and ‘unfriendliness’ towards teammates harming his popularity inside the dressing room.

However, Hernandez, who scored an impressive 26 goals in 40 appearances in his first season with the Bundesliga outfit, ended up staying with his current employers.

He scored five goals in three appearances at the end of January/beginning of February and had rediscovered his beaming smile.

The goals have dried up against recently, though. By drawing a blank during Friday night’s 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen, Chicharito has now gone four games without scoring.

Bizarre incident involving Chicharito

He was subbed off during the 82nd minute of that match and it led to a bizarre incident involving Werder’s centre-back Nikolas Moisander, who had the job of marking the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star at corners.

Hernandez spotted that his number had flashed up on the fourth official’s board and went to make his way off the pitch.

But Moisander, unaware that Bayer were in the process of making a substitution, continued following his opponent - much to Chicharito’s bemusement.

In order to make it clear that he wasn’t trying to find space for himself inside the penalty area, the Mexican was forced to walk off the pitch from near the goal, rather than towards the bench.

Both Hernandez and Moisander chuckled at the bizarre incident as Stefan Kiessling eventually entered the fray.

Chicharito is Bayer's top scorer this season

Bayer, following their 1-1 draw against Werder, now find themselves 10th in the Bundesliga table.

Chicharito is the club’s top score this season, despite his barren spell around the turn of the new year, with 10 goals in 22 league appearances.
