One of the biggest talking points in the UFC right now is the strange decision to have Michael Bisping go up against Georges St-Pierre for the middleweight title. It’s seen a lot of criticism from pundits and fans alike, as they can’t see why the organisation is opting to stage money fights rather than give legitimate contenders the opportunities they deserve.

SUPER FIGHT

However, when you bring up the term money and super fights, none come bigger than the potential clash between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.

That’s the story that continues to dominate both sports, with some suggesting a date hasn’t been agreed, other sources claiming it’ll happen in September while it’s also been reported that it will happen as early as June.

When it’s a potential fight of this magnitude – regardless of your views on it – everything else just seems to take a backseat, especially when you have Mayweather officially announcing that he’s out of retirement, but only for the Notorious.

The Count recently spoke about the rumoured fight on his new ‘Believe You Me’ podcast, and put talk of his own controversial fight with GSP on hold for a while, and made a huge claim regarding the Irishman if he can defeat the unbeaten American.

The Lancastrian claimed that should Conor do the business, he’ll be considered the greatest fighter of all time.

THE GOAT

He said: “I guess that’s a chance for Conor, really, to become the greatest fighter of all time, it really is.

“You know, love him or hate him, he’s been amazing in the UFC and then…now if he was to take out perhaps, maybe, one of the greatest boxers that ever lived…yeah…that would be something.

"That would be incredible and you can’t deny it.”

They went on to discuss how McGregor has an aura about him, and a victory over Mayweather could potentially kill, or at least silence the sport of boxing.

He added: “There is an opportunity for him to do that [kill boxing] because that would send a message that there are better fights in mixed martial arts than what there is in boxing.

“You’re right, the storyline would definitely be boxing vs. MMA and you’d have all the boxing purists sniggering to themselves and laughing saying this is ridiculous, this joke thinks he’s going to come over here and beat Floyd and, of course, you’ve got all the MMA fans all hoping for Conor to win.”

Selecting the greatest fighter of all time is a wide and debatable topic, especially since you have to consider fighters from all disciplines from over the years.

But if McGregor can get it done, if it goes ahead, then he’s certainly in the conversation.
