Port Vale goalkeeper Joe Anyon has been ruled out for the rest of the season after fracturing his tibia in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Chesterfield.
The 22-year-old required oxygen and was stretchered off just before half-time following a collision with Drew Talbot.
Anyon underwent surgery on Sunday and can expect a lengthy spell on the sidelines. "Definitely the season's over for him," physio John Bower told BBC Radio Stoke. "Realistically he's looking at about four months out."
18-year-old Chris Martin, who replaced Anyon at Saltergate, is now set to deputise until the end of the campaign.
Striker Marc Richards also pulled up with an Achilles problem for the struggling Vale Park club, who are still not safe from relegation.
"With the hard pitches, Marc struggles with his Achilles," admitted manager Dean Glover. "It's a big loss if we lose him because he's the one who can hold it up more than anyone else."
