Arsenal’s top-four hopes took a massive blow following their 3-1 defeat to West Brom on Saturday as their terrible form continued.

The Gunners have won just three times in their previous nine matches - against Hull, Sutton United and Lincoln City - and have lost four of their previous five league games.

That run of form has seen them humiliated 10-2 on aggregate by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, while they’ve fallen a massive 19 points behind league leaders Chelsea.

And their loss to West Brom on Saturday was a new low in their underwhelming season and it’s beginning to look increasingly unlikely that they will qualify for next season’s Champions League.

While the loss was bad enough, the way in which they lost was particularly disappointing. The Gunners appeared to go down without a fight and didn’t compete with West Brom’s physicality.

But Arsenal’s chances of victory suffered a blow even before the match against West Brom kicked off.

Mesut Ozil had been named in the matchday squad on Friday but walked out of the training session 24 hours before kick-off complaining of a hamstring strain. It meant he didn’t travel to the Black Country for the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.

Why Wenger is fuming

However, Arsene Wenger has been left very angry after the German told him that he plans to meet up with his national team to prepare for Wednesday’s friendly against England.

According to The Sun, Wenger is ‘fuming’ with Ozil’s decision with the report also stating that the pair’s relationship has deteriorated recently.

It casts even more doubt on the future of both Ozil and Wenger at the club.

Ozil’s contract expires at the end of next season and the Gunners surely won’t risk losing him on a free transfer by allowing him to enter his final 12 months. Therefore, they either need to sign him on a new deal or allow him to leave this summer.

As for Wenger, the Frenchman has revealed he has made a decision on his future with his deal ending this summer. A new offer is on the table for him and it appears it’s solely his decision whether he stays or goes.
