It was announced back in December that Lionel Messi is finally getting married to his long-term girlfriend, Antonella Roccuzzo, this summer.

Speculation is rife that the pair will tie the knot on June 24, the day of Messi’s 30th birthday, and many of the Barcelona superstar’s teammates are expected to attend the ceremony.

But one player who reportedly hasn’t received an invite is Gerard Pique, one of Messi’s closest friends in football.

Messi has known both Pique and Cesc Fabregas from the moment he joined Barça as a 13-year-old in 2001.

But while Fabregas will almost certainly be in attendance to see Messi and Antonella get married, Pique will not. But why?

Why Pique won't be attending Messi's wedding

Well, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais - and brought to our attention by the Daily Mail - it’s all because of an issue between Antonella and how Pique’s relationship with pop star Shakira started.

Antonella was close friends with Pique’s former girlfriend Nuria Tomas and, according to the report, was unhappy with how the couple ended the relationship.

Pique met Shakira while still in a relationship with Tomas - he appeared in the Colombian’s music video for the official song of the 2010 World Cup - and it seems Antonella still has an issue with the pair.

That she still has a close friendship with Tomas has apparently created friction between herself and Shakira.

So to avoid any further awkwardness, Pique and Shakira haven’t received an invite to the wedding of the year.

Pique on how his relationship with Shakira blossomed

Explaining how his relationship with Shakira blossomed, Pique told TV3 in October: “I met Shakira in Madrid, when we were preparing for the 2010 World Cup, and after appearing in the Waka Waka video.

“It all started when we were together in South Africa and I wrote to her. She was already there because she sang in the opening ceremony and I asked her what the weather was like.

“It is the typical stupid question, and the normal answer is to tell me to bring a jacket.

“But she started telling me what the weather was like in every single moment and it got to the point where I told her we would have to get to the World Cup final to see her again - she was singing at the final.”

Messi and Pique's friendship hasn't been affected

Despite the lack of harmony between their partners, it doesn’t appear that Pique and Messi’s friendship hasn’t been affected.

Indeed, after Messi broke the 40-goal mark for the eighth successive season with a brace against Valencia on Sunday, Pique hailed his teammate.

”He is the best of all time and we've gotten used to him doing this,” the Spanish defender was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

"He has made it seem normal but we know how difficult it is and when he stops playing it'll be very difficult for anyone to surpass those numbers. We just need to enjoy the years we have left with him."
