Bastian Schweinsteiger sounded absolutely thrilled when he signed for Manchester United in 2015.
"Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Bayern Munich for,” he said, via Sky Sports.
“I feel ready for this new and exciting challenge in what I regard as the most competitive league in the world and I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal again.”
What a nightmare spell that turned out to be, eh?
Less than two years after putting pen to paper on a three-year deal at Old Trafford, Schweinsteiger has reportedly left the club.
He's left United
According to the Chicago Tribune, the German has signed a one-year deal with MLS side Chicago Fire.
"Throughout my career, I've always sought opportunities where I hoped to make a positive impact and to help make something great,” Schweinsteiger is quoted as saying.
“My move to Chicago Fire is no different."
Unsuccessful United career
Schweinsteiger has failed to make a single league appearance under Jose Mourinho this season and was written off as an asset in the club’s accounts last year.
But Mourinho hinted that the World Cup winner’s United career wasn’t over after he made his first appearance of the season in December’s EFL Cup tie against West Ham.
“When you have a contract with the club you are the powerful one,” the Portuguese said, via the Telegraph. “You are the one that can decide your future.”
And it would seem as if Schweinsteiger has decided to head Stateside.
Chicago Fire are delighted
Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez said: “We're adding someone who has won at every level, including the very highest levels, and has done so in a way that is consistent with our values.
"We as a club will now be forced to hold ourselves to a higher standard, an accountability level. Previously, I think we could satisfy ourselves with what is known domestically. Now we need to rise to a standard that is set more internationally."
The club’s coach, Veljko Paunovic, added: “He can produce actions that few players in the world can do. He sees (things) that nobody sees. He opens the eyes of the fans, where you can hear the people say, 'Wow!'."
