Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United contract may not expire until the summer of 2019 but it’s looking increasingly that he will leave the club this summer.

The club captain has started just nine Premier League matches under Jose Mourinho this season and, after becoming the club’s record goalscorer, could be ready to end his 13-year association with United.

But where next for the United and England captain?

He was heavily linked with a move to the Chinese Super League in the winter transfer window but he believed he had plenty more to offer in England. In fact, Rooney’s desire to play in the 2018 World Cup in Russia means that remaining in the Premier League is a priority.

On Tuesday, West Ham were being linked with Rooney but it’s believed that he has very little interest in moving to London.

Rooney wants Everton return

Instead, it seems a return to Everton could be very much on the cards.

That’s according to the Independent, who claim Ronald Koeman’s side are expected to beat any Premier League club to his signature and sources close to both clubs feel the deal is “likely to happen”.

What’s more, the report states that Everton is Rooney’s first choice club and he wants to return to Goodison Park, where he left as an 18-year-old.

Despite his deal still having two more years, Old Trafford sources have said that the club could waive a transfer fee with the Toffees willing to offer £150,000-per-week.

Rooney is currently earning around double that at the Theatre of Dreams but it’s believed he would be willing to half his wages in order to return home.

West Ham might have something to say about that, though.

The Hammers could be willing to not only offer Rooney more than £150,000-per-week, but also pay a transfer fee to United.

An incredible return back to Everton is what Rooney wants, though, and it’s looking increasingly likely to happen.
