Kell Brook is set to fulfill a sporting dream by defending his IBF welterweight title in front of his home fans at Bramall Lane on the May 27 when he fights American Errol Spence Jnr.

The Sheffield United fanatic Brook has tasted just one defeat in his 37 fights, which came against the legendary Kazakhstan middleweight Gennady Golovkin when he was stopped in the fifth round in September last year at the O2 Arena.

It was a brave decision to move up to middleweight to fight Golovkin, but now Brook has returned to welterweight to fight Spence Jnr.

Sky Sports reported that Brook is really looking forward to the challenge in his home city.

"I'm so excited about this fight and also about making history in my city.

"It's long been a dream of mine to fight outdoors at Bramall Lane and I'm pleased to do that in the biggest fight in the welterweight division.

"I saw many people talk about how I would avoid Errol Spence but they don't know me, they don't know what I'm about."

Spence, 27, has won all of his 21 professional fights, including 18 by knockout.

While it will be the first time he will be fighting outside the US, Spence did participate in the London Olympics. However, he failed to claim a medal losing in the quarter finals.

His last two fights have arguably been his best in the pro ranks, knocking out well-credentialed opponents Chris Algieri and Leonard Bundu within six rounds.

He has waited for the opportunity to fight Brook, and now that the time has arrived, he is greatly looking forward to the occasion.

Spence said: "I'm happy I'm finally getting an opportunity to accomplish a lifelong dream of becoming a world champion.

"I feel that this is one of the best and biggest fights in world boxing and I am 100 per cent focused and determined to bring the belt back home to the USA - on May 27 I will be more than ready."

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said: "This is one of the best fights in world boxing.

"Many believed that Kell Brook would look to avoid Errol Spence but he is a proud man who never ducks a challenge.

"This is a very tough fight to come back to after Golovkin but I believe Kell Brook is the best welterweight in the world and he will have the chance to prove it on May 27."

With Sheffield United currently sitting comfortably on top of the League One standings, there could be a double celebration for the Bramall Lane faithful come late May.

It is bound to be an occasion to remember.
