Jason day has explained to the media why he forfeited his match against Pat Perez at the WGC Dell Matchplay Championship after just six holes. Many thought the world number three had aggravated a recurring back injury after he shook hands to concede while two holes down in the match, however, Day has since put those rumours straight. In a press conference flush with raw emotion, Day revealed that he needed to be by his mother's side as she faces massive cancer surgery in the coming days. The longing to be with his ailing mother overcame the Australian, who is also the defending champion at the tournament, and he was unable to battle through as a result.Day has already lost his father to the disease at just the tender age of 12 and the thought of his mother going into surgery alone was simply too much for him to bare.Day broke down in tears in front of the gathered media as he explained the situation.“My mum has lung cancer and at the start of the year in Australia she was diagnosed with 12 months to live,” Day said, tears streaming down his face.“The diagnosis is much better being over here. She’s going in for surgery this Friday and it’s really hard to even comprehend being on the course right now.“It has been very, very emotional, as you can tell. I have already gone through it once with my dad and I know how it feels, and it’s so hard to see another parent go through it."

With the Masters only two weeks away, it is uncertain as to whether Day will feature at the sport's premier event.

Day's mother played a massive part in sculpting what the man we see today. After the death of his father, Day threatened to implode, and as such, Day's mother sold their home and sent Jason to a boarding school known globally for sporting excellence, and the rest is history as they say.

Day will now fly to Colombia, Ohio to be with his mother and our thoughts go with him.
