AJ Styles has been a revelation since stepping into the WWE and has laid to waste any pre-existing stigmas about TNA talent surviving in Vince McMahon's promotion. After a seriously entertaining run as WWE champion, the Phenomenal One has fallen out of the title picture in recent weeks and has now been paired with Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 33.The story behind this match is that Styles blames McMahon for not getting him a main event slot at the Show of Shows and after throwing Shane-O-Mac through a car window last week, the SmackDown Live commissioner got his own back this week when he drove Styles through a table with an elbow drop.Still, as exciting as the past couple of weeks have been for the feud, plenty of fans have been left underwhelmed with the position Styles has been given at WrestleMania this year. He's a main event talent who has, arguably, been the best performer in the company for the past 12 months. Surely there was a marquee matchup that the WWE could have given him?Well, fans who buy into that logic won't like Shawn Michaels' comments on Sam Roberts' podcast.“I could’ve had that match, they did not have an opponent for AJ at Wrestlemania”HBK went on to say that the WWE contacted him about the match after the incredible Twitter reaction some fan art of the two generated. Mr. WrestleMania ultimately declined the opportunity insisting he wants to stay retired.“I wish that man was here 10 years ago man, I really do," Michaels finished.

It's rare that a wrestler genuinely stays retired in this industry, but Michaels appears to refuse to budge on his status.

Although it would have been one of the best in-ring clinics WWE fans are likely to ever see, it will have to remain a fantasy match.
