Men’s tennis: the sport that once boasted the likes of Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, has turned into a breeding ground of hot-heads and entertainers. In recent times, fines have been issued to such quality players as Novak Djokovic for misconduct. Maria Sharapova has been banned for doping, and there’s a temperamental Aussie on the loose in Nick Kyrgios. It is like something out of a dystopian novel, and the disease is spreading, finally catching up with Portuguese Gastao Elias, who used creative visualisation and took his frustrations out on the crowd. He was up against Argentine Horacio Zeballos, and was very much in control of proceedings, claiming the first set and brimming with confidence. It was during the second set that things turned sour for Elias, and it only seemed to be going from bad to worse as he found himself 2–5 down against an opponent he was cruising past to seal a place in the next round. And it seemed as though he could contain himself no longer, when Zeballos stunned him with a break point in the second set, turning on a group of onlookers and smashing the ball into nobody in particular.Check out the bizarre moment here.It prompted a response from umpire Carlos Bernardes, who gave the 26-year old a talking to straight after the incident.According to a Portuguese journalist’s translation, Bernardes told Elias: "If you do the same thing that the other 'poor' (player) did. Don't do that. You are not like that, I know you."The "poor" player that the Umpire was referring to was Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, who struck a referee during a Davis Cup tie, leaving him needing urgent surgery to repair a damaged eye socket. Shapovalov was defaulted and Canada lost to Great Britain.Elias was lucky to escape further action being taken against him and was allowed to continue his match against Zeballos. Not that it made much difference anyway, with the Argentine claiming the second set, and 6–2 and winning the final set 7–5 to make it to the next round.Elias’ actions were met with a flurry of responses from social media users, with many sympathising with the Portuguese and recognising that it was a very uncharacteristic moment from him, but among those that hit out was the one and only serial troublemaker Nick Kyrgios.Kyrgios tweeted that Elias should be fined and that sort of action should not be allowed in the tournament and that kicked off a heated twitter exchange between the two.Check out the exchange here.
