England fans will often say that players should be picked on form rather than reputation - but is that really the answer? In any case, England managers over the past decade have often selected players from less fashionable clubs based on form - the likes of Michael Ricketts, David Nugent and Matt Jarvis all spring to mind - but many of them turn out to be one-cap wonders.Another one-cap wonder is Jay Bothroyd, who was bizarrely called up for England’s international friendly against France back in 2010 by then manager Fabio Capello.Bothroyd became the first English player from a Championship club since Nugent in 2007 to play for his country when he replaced Andy Carroll with 20 minutes remaining. He failed to score - and that was the end of his extremely brief international career.

Bothroyd's career since has been... different

Bothroyd went on to play Premier League football with Queens Park Rangers for a season before spending half the 2012-13 campaign on loan with Sheffield Wednesday.

Since leaving QPR in 2013, Bothroyd’s career has taken some rather weird but wonderful turns.

The former Arsenal trainee, who had spells with Coventry City, Perugia and Wolves amongst other clubs earlier in his career, ended a six-month period of free agency by joining Muangthong United of the Thai Premier League in January 2014.

He scored a reasonably impressive seven goals in 18 appearances for the club before signing for the Japanese outfit Jubilo Iwata in February 2015.

And it turns out that he’s been a massive hit over in Japan.

He helped Jubilo secure promotion to the J1 League by scoring 20 goals in 32 appearances during his debut season with the club, before netting 13 in 19 matches the season after.

Bothroyd left the club last year due to personal issues but, according to the Mirror, has now agreed to return to the Far East this summer.

The 34-year-old has agreed a pre-contract to sign on July 1 and will hope to continue banging in the goals in the Japanese top flight over the next couple of years.

Who knows, another outstanding season in the J1 League and Gareth Southgate might be on the phone ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
