After going 10-6 in 2015 and narrowly missing the playoffs, the New York Jets took a major step back in 2016, going 5-11.

As a result, they will have the No. 6 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Their offensive struggles last season were well-documented, as they ranked 30th in the NFL in points per game and 26th in total yards.

Since the quarterback position was perhaps the main source of New York’s offensive struggles, the team decided to move on from Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith, signing veteran Josh McCown to a one-year deal.

Youngsters Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg will also be a part of the depth chart at the quarterback position.

However, it doesn’t seem like the organization has much faith in the trio.

In a Friday conference call to reporters, Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan acknowledged that all options are on the table:

"I think going into this thing, our plan is to basically find the best group of quarterbacks from that standpoint. We've obviously made a move in pro free agency," he said. "There's still the college draft and like I said earlier, all options are on the table at the quarterback position going forward. With any player on this team, they're going to have to earn their spot on the roster and I think Todd (Bowles) would echo that same thought.”

Along with that point, he addressed the potential of Petty and Hackenberg, who he thinks McCown could have a positive effect on heading into 2017:

"They're both young players. We're excited to see those guys get back in here for the offseason program and see how they do," he mentioned. "We'd like to see both of them make progress and eventually get on the field and play. We'll see how that plays itself out here going forward, but we're definitely excited about the young guys and pairing them with Josh. We'll see how it plays itself out, but all three of those guys have opportunities in the offseason and training camp to go out there to show where they're at and how they've developed.”

In other words, it seems like the Jets will consider taking a quarterback in the draft if their scouts lead them in that direction, while Petty and Hackenberg will have opportunities to prove themselves in training camp and in preseason contests.

The 14-year veteran McCown, who totaled 3,209 passing yards with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over two recent seasons with the Cleveland Browns, will presumably provide some stability in the upcoming season, the direction of the organization is very much in question.

In each of the past six seasons, the Jets have missed the playoffs.
