England’s 2-0 win over Lithuania at Wembley on Sunday evening wasn’t a classic by any stretch of the imagination. But it was a case of ‘job done’ for Gareth Southgate’s side, who secured all three points thanks to goals either side of half-time from Jermain Defoe and Jamie Vardy. The result means England remain top of Group F, four points clear of second-placed Slovakia, and are the only team in European-based qualifying for the 2018 World Cup finals to have kept clean sheets in all five of their opening qualifiers."I thought it was one of those afternoons where it's job done,” Southgate told BBC Sport after the match. "I am not going to eulogise over the performance, but the overall week I think has been really positive in setting the tone of how we want to work."The players have got a good feel about them, a spirit and they see the direction we want to head. For sure, we'll play better than we did today."

England fans might remember one moment...

In truth, the match was low on quality and very few of the 77,600 spectators inside Wembley will remember too much from the 90 minutes in years to come.

But some of them might recall the time Kyle Walker produced an extraordinary piece of athleticism to control a cross-field pass from Michael Keane.

The Burnley centre-back brushed a long-range pass to the right-back, who did magnificently to keep the ball in play.

Walker stretched out his right leg - how he didn’t pull his hamstring, we’ll never know - to the astonishment of those inside the stadium.

He then allowed the ball to bounce once before half-volleying a delicious cross into the penalty area.

The ball was headed clear by one of the Lithuanian defenders but, had it led to a goal, it would have been one of the best assists of the season.
