As the eagerly anticipated fight between the undefeated and five-weight world champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr, and former UFC champion, Conor McGregor, edges closer, Amir Khan has had his say on how he believes the fight will play out.

With the financial issues, venue and date still to be determined the fight once believed to be a fantasy could, and most likely will, now happen. Mayweather is believed to be coming out of retirement to face the former UFC star who earned his boxing certificate earlier this year.

However, Amir Khan believes that McGregor does not have a chance against Mayweather.

Khan believes the American is far too mentally tough for the Irishman, and will be able to neutralise his attacking power.

"McGregor keeps saying he wants to come into boxing but he’s all talk," he said, per The Sun.

“I know he’s doing a little bit of boxing here and there, but boxing and MMA are two different sports."

McGregor's power

Nevertheless, Khan did recognise that McGregor has got that punch power that could hurt the American superstar.

"He’s got that punch power that everyone says," he admitted.

But Khan believes it wouldn't be enough to win due to Mayweather's impenetrable defence.

"He [Mayweather] can break anyone down, take away that power, pick them off and I think McGregor just falls short in boxing," Khan added.

"It’s his first fight he’s having as a professional boxer, 12 rounds, against the best boxer, with the best defence."

Many would agree with Khan that it is not fair that McGregor has walked straight into the boxing arena and got to fight one of the biggest names in sport.

“He [McGregor] could start off maybe taking one or two warm up fights then taking someone decent then taking Mayweather at the end," he said.

“Floyd is one of the best fighters in the decade we’ve had in boxing and McGregor wants to fight the best out there.

“Floyd’s getting a bit older now, he might not be physically stronger now, or physically in great shape but I know one thing about Floyd – he’s mentally a great fighter.”

However, if and when the fight between these two superstars does materialise, it will be one you won't want to miss with the defence of Mayweather being tested by McGregor's punch power.

But most will agree with Khan that the American will simply have far too much mentally for McGregor, who will not last the full 12 rounds.
