FIFA, the governing body of the world's most popular sport, has been in somewhat of a decline ever since Sepp Blatter was banned from taking part in any of its activities back in 2015.

However, one thing which certainly hasn't declined since then is the form of the two greatest superstars in the modern game - Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The pair have taken football to a whole new level with their incredible consistency, record-breaking goalscoring feats, and between them, they've won the past nine Ballon d'Or awards.

After the 2016 FIFA Extraordinary Congress, Gianni Infantino, UEFA's general secretary since 2009, emerged as Blatter's replacement and has been FIFA president ever since.

The Swiss-born administrator was recently interviewed by Football Talks, and he was asked to weigh in on the big debate which everyone has an opinion on: Messi versus Ronaldo.

FIFA president picks between Messi and Ronaldo

When speaking about Real Madrid and Barcelona's main men, Infantino tried to be diplomatic, however, as you might expect, he did highlight the importance of FIFA's new The Best award.

The 46-year-old said, via Sport-English: "I think there are big differences between Cristiano and Messi. They have different styles, they are physically different and are two incredible footballers.

"One year one is a bit better, the next year it's the other and it has been like that for the last 10 years. It has been great competition. Officially Cristiano is recognised as the best by FIFA."

So, whilst praising both players, Infantino just sided with Ronaldo based on the prestigious individual honour the Portugal captain received in Zurich back on January 9.

Real are currently pipping Barca in a fascinating Spanish title race, but with an incredible 41 goals in 40 games this season (compared to 26 in 34 for Cristiano), Messi is surely putting himself in an excellent position to once again officially be the best player in the world.
