There was very little which was remarkable about England's 2-0 win over Lithuania.

Gareth Southgate is still finding his feet in charge of the national team, so he will no doubt be delighted that his side avoided a potential banana skin and took another step towards qualifying for next year's World Cup.

Yet, sadly for the watching public, it was exactly the kind of game we've come to expect from England against one of Europe's minnows - they got the job done, but they went about it in pretty boring fashion.

The only real talking point was the heartwarming presence of Jermain Defoe.

The Sunderland striker led the team out alongside five-year-old Bradley Lowery, and his best mate watched on as he scored the opening goal.

Defoe may be 34-years-old, but he has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time. As Raheem Sterling floated a ball into the box, the former Spurs man neatly hit home.

Age is the only thing really counting against the forward.

The clock's ticking on Defoe's career

The fact that Southgate has had to call upon a veteran says a lot about his dearth of options up front, particularly in Harry Kane's absence.

Nonetheless, it's hard to argue with Defoe's goal record. Sunderland have had an abysmal season, and with little service, he's still scored 14 Premier League goals.

It's raised the very real possibility that against all the odds, he could find himself called upon for the World Cup in Russia.

Having missed out on the last World Cup and the 2016 European Championships, Defoe is determined to make an impact at one last international tournament, even if he'll be 35 by then.

Extraordinary commitment

A player in the twilight of his career needs to pull out all the stops to make sure that happens, and he claims he's even going vegan to get himself in shape.

“There’s no better feeling than to feel fresh,” he said, per the Mirror.

“So I make sure I’m doing the cryotherapy, the massage and eating the right things.

“I’m trying to turn vegan, which is a funny one because when I go to my mum’s she’s got every meat you can imagine out on the table. But I’m just trying to tick every box so I can continue playing.”

A lot of players might be willing to go the extra mile to get in the England squad, but there must be few who are going to show that kind of dedication.
