Shanghai Shenhua grabbed the attention of world football when they made Carlos Tevez the highest-paid player of all time in January. The Argentinan is picking up a salary in the region of £32million from the Chinese Super League moneybags. It's just as well the club have such enormous resources available, as it looks as if their stadium is going to need a little work.Concerning footage has emerged of the ground bursting into flames on Tuesday morning, though fortunately, there are no casualties.Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze fairly quickly, but traffic was disrupted. As you can see in the footage below, huge clouds of smoke were billowing out of the rafters. At the end of the clip, some of the inside of the stadium looks to have been gutted by the flames.

Shenhua are now set to play their next home game against Changchun Yatai on April 16 elsewhere, as the fire has done sufficient damage to make it uninhabitable for the next couple of weeks.

According to the Daily Mail, the cause is still being investigated. It's thought that it may have originated in the stadium's indoor rock-climbing facilities, but of course, it's too early on to confirm that.

Iconic stadium

The Hongkou Stadium is a symbol of the progress football has made in China over the past few years. As the country's first professional stadium, it's emblematic of the Far East's quest to make the beautiful game more prominent to its people.

This emergency has put a huge dampener on what has been a promising start to the season for Gus Poyet's side, which also boasts former Premier League striker Obafemi Martins.

Shenhua are hoping to improve on a fourth-placed finish last season and are unbeaten in their first two league games of the new campaign.

After beating Jiangsu Suning 4-0 in their opening fixture, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tianjin Quanjian, the side believed to be targeting Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
