With all of the talk focusing on Conor McGregor’s potential super fight with Floyd Mayweather inside of a boxing ring, it’s become easy to forget he still has unfinished business inside of the UFC Octagon. He’s still the reigning lightweight champion, and fans are eager to see the organisation’s biggest draw return from his hiatus and put his championship on the line.

HIATUS

UFC should be his long-term plan, though. In boxing, Mayweather seems to be the only real, money making option he has there and if that doesn’t go down well – if it happens at all – then his stock clearly decreases.

The UFC, on the other hand, has plenty of fighters on the roster who would not only love to fight the Notorious, but they’ve put themselves in the perfect position to stake a claim at his championship gold.

One of the fighters that is eager to meet the Irishman again is Nate Diaz.

Recently, he shot down claims from UFC president Dana White that he was holding out for a fight with McGregor and turned down multiple offers. However, with Diaz and McGregor currently 1-1 against each other, it’s logical to book them for a trilogy fight where there will be a clear winner in their chapter, and there’s money to be made.

There’s belief that McGregor has been distancing himself from a third fight with the Stockton native, but a post on his Facebook and Twitter accounts has hinted that he’s bracing himself for an eventual clash.

UFC recently released unseen footage from his rematch with Diaz last year, and he decided to post a message alongside it – and understandably, it has fans excited.

TRILOGY HINT

As you’ll be able to see below, he posted: “This is an amazing video of an amazing chapter in my career! This is a brutal business! Some have it. Most don’t. I look forward to the trilogy fight down the road. It was a hell of a fight! Enjoy.”

He’s right, it was a memorable fight and fans clearly enjoyed their first outing to an extent that they wanted to see it again – and now a third is potentially on the cards.

It seems like McGregor is in a lose-lose situation, though.

When he returns to the Octagon, a third fight with Diaz is clearly an attractive option but he’s currently ranked eighth in the lightweight rankings and we know how outspoken the rightful contenders can be when they're overlooked.

Plus, he already gets a lot of criticism for not defending his titles, and when he does, it should be against those closer to the top.

At the same time, should McGregor battle through those contenders then he wastes more valuable time in putting together the fight with Diaz.
