A John Cena heel turn is always an interesting topic of debate with some fans claiming WWE can’t afford to make it happen, while others suggest becoming a villain would be the best move for his career.

Perhaps that time has passed now, certainly based on the level of impact it would have as Cena continues to take more time away from WWE and dive into other projects as Hollywood opportunities continue to flood in for him.

HEEL TURN

Over the years, there have been plenty of stories suggesting that a heel turn was coming.

We’ve had a Reddit user post his theory on how WWE trademarking ‘Fear My Name’ was for a Cena heel turn, but most recently former WWE writer Kevin Eck discussed how Vince McMahon actually signed off on a heel turn but got cold feet at the last minute.

It’s understandable why that happened, as Cena simply makes too much money for the company for them to go through with it, while at the time, there was nobody ready to instantly replace him as the top face in the company.

However, it’s very rare we hear WWE talk about this so publicly, but that’s exactly what Stephanie McMahon did.

Stephanie was also in the headlines a couple of weeks ago after another story was unearthed, claiming that she stopped Cena from getting fired before he became the massive star he is today.

TOO LATE

Now, appearing on Peter Rosenberg’s Cheap Heat podcast, she admitted that she wanted Cena to turn heel and effectively confirmed the claims that it was on the cards.

She said: “At one point in his career, I really wanted to see him turn heel. I wanted it as a fan and I also thought it was the right thing to do, but it turns out I was wrong.

“And Vince and John…oh yeah [McMahon fought to have Cena turn heel], oh yeah, totally, I did. Yeah, but I’m glad that we didn’t go that way, and I think, now, it would be odd for John to turn heel.

“I guess never say never because anything can happen in WWE, but I don’t think I would really miss it. I think that we would miss him. I don’t know that we would miss the heel turn.”

It’s interesting to see that someone influential from the company also wanted to see it happen, despite the key role Cena has had on the top of the card for the past decade.

As she said, it’s probably too late now, though, so we just have to think what could have been had they pulled the trigger.
