Luke Shaw’s demise at Manchester United has been a pretty hard watch.

The 21-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford, his development having stalled after suffering a horrific double leg break in September 2015.

Shaw didn’t play another competitive match for 11 months. It was hoped that the left-back, who was included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2014, would make a successful return and continue to fulfil his potential.

He has made just 15 appearances in all competitions this season, eight of those coming in the Premier League.

Before his debilitating injury, Shaw was on the rise to becoming one of the best full-backs in Europe. He was once the most expensive teenager in the world and beat Ashley Cole to a place in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the 2014 World Cup.

But last month, Jose Mourinho gave a grim picture of just how far the ex-Southampton man has fallen by admitting he was fourth in the pecking order at Man United.

“I am playing with Daley Blind, with Marcos Rojo, with Matteo Darmian and all of them are playing the way I like a full-back to play,” Mourinho said, via the Mirror.

“Luke has to wait for his chance. He has to work better and better knowing that I give nothing for free.

“In this moment he is behind the others.”

Shaw's in Mourinho's bad books

Shaw’s last appearance for his club came on March 4, in United’s fiery 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth.

It was his first start in the league since October and don’t be surprised if he has to wait another few months for his next start.

Why Mourinho blasted Shaw

According to The Sun’s chief football reporter Neil Ashton, Shaw received a serious dressing down by Mourinho after the Portuguese spotted him talking to Bournemouth players during the match.

Mourinho was already fuming after Tyrone Mings stamped on Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s head during the clash.

And Shaw bore the brunt of his manager’s frustration when he received a stern telling off.

Uncertain future

The youngster played seven minutes in England’s 1-0 defeat to Germany last week, showing he’s still in Gareth Southgate’s plans.

But his future in Manchester is far from certain.
