February 4, 2017 marked the tenth anniversary of a moment Manchester United fans never expected - or hoped - to see.
The Red Devils travelled to White Hart Lane to play Tottenham Hotspur when, in the closing minutes of the game, Edwin van der Sar suffered a broken nose.
Sir Alex Ferguson had made all of his substitutes so he couldn’t bring Tomasz Kuszczak on from the bench. So he was left in a pretty awkward situation.
Who to put in goal? Rio Ferdinand? Nemanja Vidic? See if Paul Scholes is as good between the sticks as he is in midfield?
After some initial confusion - Ferdinand actually put on the spare goalkeeper shirt - John O’Shea stepped up to play the final five minutes in goal.
It was a good thing United were 4-0 up at the time because Tottenham would’ve fancied their chances of beating a 10-man United who had O’Shea between the sticks.
"I'm very proud," the Irish defender, who now plays for Sunderland, said afterwards, per United’s official website.
"I asked Edwin whether he had a clean sheet bonus when we got into the dressing room because I want half of it! It's definitely a special moment that I'll look back on."
Wayne Rooney found it hilarious
O’Shea was more involved in the action than he probably would have wanted to have been. He came out for a cross, and even perfectly dealt with a 1-on-1.
Wayne Rooney’s reaction to the whole experience summed it up. Check out O’Shea’s highlights in the video below.

O'Shea's winner at Anfield
It was certainly one of the best moments of the 2006-07 season, a campaign in which Man United pretty much led from start to finish.
They lost just five times as they beat Chelsea to the title by six points.
And appearing in goal wasn’t even the highlight of O’Shea’s season. That came two months later, when he scored a 91st minute to seal a 1-0 win at Anfield.
