All of the talk surrounding Conor McGregor seems to be revolving around the potential super fight with Floyd Mayweather in a boxing ring.

The talk has just gone back and forth for months now, and every time it feels like we’re going to have a slight breakthrough, we’re back at square one and are eagerly awaiting to see what happens.

SUPER FIGHT

July and September have been named as potential dates for when it could happen, but until there’s an official announcement, nobody knows what’s happening.

Because of this, it’s easy to forget that the Irishman is still the UFC lightweight champion and despite being on a hiatus from the Octagon right now as he prepares for fatherhood, he’s expected to come back and put that gold on the line.

The organisation has tried to advance the division without him, but Khabib Nurmagomedov pulling out of his interim title fight against Tony Ferguson did more harm than good, and more fighters are continuing to call out McGregor as he aggressively pursues a bout with Mayweather.

While McGregor has remained adamant that his next fight will be against the unbeaten American – who has also confirmed that he’s only coming out of retirement for McGregor – UFC president Dana White has other ideas.

While speaking to TMZ, White is already targeting McGregor's first fight back in the Octagon since he dominated Eddie Alvarez inside Madison Square Garden, and expects Ferguson to be next in line for the gold if the talks with Mayweather stall, despite being behind The Eagle in the official rankings.

According to JOE, he said: “He obviously has a lot of opportunities right now.

“Tony Ferguson is out there, the Floyd Mayweather thing is out there, we’ll see how this thing plays out.”

EL CUCUY

There are a couple of interesting points to pick out from White’s comments, the first being that he picked the number two lightweight rather than the number one.

McGregor has openly stated that the unbeaten Dagestani is a ‘pull out merchant’, and he pulled the same stunt just one day before his scheduled bout with El Cucuy, so perhaps even White is unwilling to take the risk of building up the fight just in case the same thing happens again.

He also didn’t talk about a potential third fight with Nate Diaz, something McGregor hinted at on his social media accounts when looking back at his victory against the Stockton native at the UFC 202 event.

Even though fans were looking forward to Nurmagomedov and Ferguson going at it, it seems as if White has made his mind up on who will be the McGregor’s next challenger.
