Jose Mourinho has only just started tailoring the Manchester United squad to his every need.

The Portuguese boss will likely again be given strong financial support this summer to pursue any transfer target he requires to bolster the chances of the Premier League title returning to Old Trafford.

United have been hugely underwhelming this season considering the arrival of Mourinho and over £150m-worth of new signings was meant to signal a new era for the club.

It has taken some time for Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly to adjust to the Premier League, while ironically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is so far the standout performer despite joining on a free transfer.

The Red Devils could face a tricky path to securing automatic Champions League qualification finish via their league position this season – they are currently in fifth, four points behind Liverpool with five of their 11 remaining fixtures against clubs in the top seven.

Mourinho has spoken of his preference to win the Europa League over finishing in the top four as it would give them elite European football with the bonus of winning a major trophy.

It is a more than feasible plan given how their campaign has panned out, though the United boss will want – and likely require – to avoid being in a similar situation next season.

Mourinho has been linked with several players who he believes can help the Red Devils return to the top, with a long-term replacement for Ibrahimovic being among his top priorities.

The Mirror reports United are now prepared to enter the race for one of the most sought-after strikers on the planet in Romelu Lukaku.

The Everton star – who is the Premier League top scorer with 21 goals – would cost somewhere in the region of £70 million to prise away from Goodison Park.

That kind of money is no obstacle for the Old Trafford outfit, though signing Lukaku would all but force Mourinho to concede he was wrong to axe the Belgian when they were both at Chelsea in 2014.

However, on paper alone, the 23-year-old represents an ideal candidate to solve the persistent striker woes at United having bagged 49 Premier League goals since arriving in Merseyside on a permanent basis three seasons ago.
