Arsene Wenger is in a position where he can ill afford to take any more backwards steps between now and the end of the campaign.

Arsenal have allowed their push for silverware this season to crumble in a matter of weeks beginning at the tail end of January.

The Emirates faithful have been split over whether the answer to their problems is for Wenger to step aside at the end conclusion of his 21st year at the helm.

Still licking the wounds of yet another humiliating Champions League exit, the Frenchman has his side have found themselves under even more pressure after losing four of their last five Premier League matches.

Wenger – who is yet to publicly disclose whether he will stay on beyond this season – has recently faced another hurdle in regards to speculation surrounding one of his star men.

Alexis Sanchez’s at Arsenal has been in limbo for much of the season, but suggestions of him potentially jumping ship to Chelsea has inflamed the situation.

The Telegraph reports the 28-year-old has told Chilean media is happy to stay in London but wants to play in a team with a “winning mentality”.

Asked how he interpreted what Sanchez had said, Wenger replied: "In a very positive way. There's only one team in London, so he is happy.

"I think he's happy here. It's true we have not extended his contract yet but I hope he will stay at the club. I think you have to be cautious when people give interviews in their home countries because the interpretation is not always exactly what they wanted to say.

"But I don't see anything negative (in Sanchez's comments). He said he wants to win the championship, that's what everybody wants and I can understand that completely.”

The Arsenal boss was also questioned whether Sanchez joining Chelsea could give rise to a situation similar to when the club sold numerous key players to Manchester City.

"It is true that it happened before when we were in the position financially where we had to sell our best players, and that's not the case any more," he said.

"He has one and a half year's contract so I don't think it is an immediate concern for Arsenal Football Club."

April will likely be a crucial period in determining the fate of several important figures at the Emirates, with a trip to Manchester City this Saturday being their first test.
