Manchester United are set to be major players once again in the summer transfer window.

Jose Mourinho spent more than £150 million last summer - £89m of which was used to sign Paul Pogba - and nobody will be surprised if the Red Devils’ spending hits nine figures when the window opens at the end of the season.

There are clearly areas of improvement within United’s squad. Do fans really expect them to challenge for a Premier League title with their current defensive options?

Mourinho has confirmed he already knows which players he wants to sign, so United supporters can expect another exciting summer.

But one player who he has already ruled out is Barcelona star Neymar, who was reported to be the subject of a £173 million bid from United.

“I always try to be objective and pragmatic with the clubs and ask the clubs for what can be given to me. Neymar is absurd,” Mourinho told ESPN Brasil.

“A club like Barcelona cannot and will not lose Neymar.

“Although Messi is still a young player with years to go, he is already 30, and Neymar will be the great player of Barcelona after Messi.

“I think (trying to sign him is like) going to try to break into a safe, impossible.”

And with Antoine Griezmann reaffirming his desire to stay at Atletico Madrid, suddenly the list of United’s potential targets looks much less attractive.

United are in the race for emerging star

But don’t fear, United fans. According to ESPN, the Red Devils are leading the race to sign one of the hottest young talents in Europe: Kylian Mbappe.

The 18-year-old has burst onto this season with some terrific performances for Monaco. With 19 goals in 32 appearances - by comparison, Cristiano Ronaldo scored five times in his first 33 matches - he’s on the radar of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The heir to Messi and CR7

Mbappe is the talk of the town and it’s easy to see why. This week, he became the youngest player to debut for the France national team since 1955 when he played 12 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Spain.

And Mourinho is reportedly determined to make Mbappe into the heir to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mourinho doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to turning young prospects into world beaters but in Mbappe’s case, that shouldn’t be too difficult.
