Patrick Vieira v Roy Keane has to be one of the most epic - if not *the* most epic - player-versus-player rivalries of the Premier League era.

The captains of Arsenal and Manchester United respectively were, in many ways, extremely similar.

They both possessed an intense will to win, they led be example, would protect their teammates and never, ever shirked a challenge.

Their legendary pre-match altercation in the Highbury tunnel before a clash between the two teams in February 2005 remains one of the most incredible moments in Premier League history.

Keane, furious after Vieira had gone up to Gary Neville and warned the right-back about tackling his teammates aggressively, ranted and raved at the Gunners’ skipper before adding: “I’ll see you out there!”

The subsequent 90 minutes, as you’ll probably remember, were just as spectacular. Vieira opened the scoring in the eighth minute but United ended up recording an impressive 4-2 victory.

They became friendly after retirement

Since retirement, Keane and Vieira - against all the odds - actually became quite good mates.

They worked together on ITV Sport as pundits and even recorded an entertaining programme a couple of years ago called ‘Best of Enemies’ which is well worth a watch.

But Vieira's just taken a big dig at Keane

Vieira is currently the head coach of New York City FC and couldn’t resist taking another pop at Keane this week during an interview with Copa 90.

With Keane over the other side of the Atlantic, the Frenchman presumably felt safe enough to have a pop.

Asked to name his favourite moment against the United legend, Vieira responded: “The thing is that was Roy Keane [holds his hand out] and there was myself [holds his other hand out higher].”

Oof.

The two Copa 90 presenters obviously loved this response from the former Gunners star.

“He was always seeing the back of my shirt,” Vieira added. “He always had the number four shirt on his mind.”

“I always loved to play against this guy because I think we shared the same passion for the game and I think he was a fantastic leader for United.

“Every time I played against him it was tough, I knew it was going to be difficult.

“He’s a winner and I always looked forward to playing against him because you always want to play against the best and at that time he was one of the best. Until I arrived.”
