Since Jamie Carragher hung up his boots in 2013, it seems the Liverpool legend has spent about as much time on Twitter as he has analysing matches for Sky Sports. The 39-year-old is no stranger to banter with Gary Neville across social media and, in the past, it has made for amusing reading. Luckily for Neville though, he has dodged the bullet on this particular occasion.Instead, it was Steven Gerrard in Carragher’s crosshair this week. Given the hilariously sly comments he received in the first place, however, it’s certainly fair play.

NIVEA MEN interview

Footballers are never too far away from their sponsors and, for Gerrard, that can often prove NIVEA MEN. The German care brand has the ex-Liverpool captain on their books as well as fellow Merseyside stars such as Adam Lallana.

In light of this, NIVEA MEN carried out an interview with Gerrard to attract new customers by prying the legendary midfielder.

One question proved: “Who is the most vain footballer you have ever played with?”

As far as sponsorship events go, NIVEA MEN weren’t messing about, clearly. Nevertheless, the 36-year-old didn’t hold back and instigated two integral members of his old back four.

Gerrard responded by stating: "John Arne Riise. But I've noticed Carra's started wearing wax on Sky Sports so he might take that mantle."

Ouch. If Gerrard is to be believed, the Sky cameras have turned Carragher from a no-nonsense defender to a manscaped pundit.

Twitter response

Naturally though, Carragher wasn’t going to let that comment slide and took to Twitter as means of responding. It saw what proved a rather amusing answer backfire within hours.

The 39-year-old tweeted:

Sorry Steven, but Carra has a point. Slating an ex-teammate for his dermatological habits proves somewhat hypocritical when you’re a promoting no other than NIVEA MEN.

Furthermore, it seems Gerrard was partial to altering his facial hair on the orders of his other half. Depending on how you view it, that’s either 1-1 or 2-1 to Carragher.

Of course, it’s all a bit of a laugh with Carragher and Gerrard proving a notoriously close duo. Their passionate love and fight for the Reds saw them comprise Liverpool’s backbone for over a decade.

It’s hard to see them advertising hand cream and diving into the make-up department during the hearts of their careers.

In 2017 though, it’s hardly alien anymore. With Paul Pogba sporting a different haircut every week and the walk into training proving nothing short of a photo shoot, such jibes prove bizarrely relevant.

A handful of wax or hand cream won’t ever take away the fact they’re Champions League winners though, that’s for sure.
