Manchester United fans have had almost a year to wake themselves up from the snore-fest that was football under Louis van Gaal.

When he was appointed as David Moyes' successor in 2014, the Dutchman looked like the perfect fit for the Red Devils, with seven league titles under his belt.

The rest, as they say, is history, but not in a good way.

Last year's FA Cup was all the 65-year-old had to show for his tedious spell in charge.

It was inevitable that United would experience something of a lull after the glory years of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Few people were expecting LVG to emulate the legendary Scot, but all United fans ask is that their team at least play the game the right way.

As can be heard in the Stretford end nowadays: "Jose's playing the way that United should."

Watching United was painful

Paul Scholes is never one to sit on the fence with his abrasive punditry, and he has wasted no time in voicing his pleasure that Jose Mourinho is now in charge.

Why? Because, he's quoted in The Sun, football under Van Gaal was nothing short of "shambolic".

“The last couple of years were tough to watch and I think Jose Mourinho has steadied the ship now," Scholes explained.

“They are a team that is exciting again. The league position should probably be a little bit better than it is really.

“They have dropped some silly points, especially at home, but are creating chances and look like a team everyone wants to watch again.”

It's results that matter

As much as Mourinho has made United easier on the eye, ultimately he'll be judged by results on the pitch.

It looks likely that his side will miss out on the top four yet again, but he has at least delivered silverware at the first opportunity by winning the EFL Cup.

Even if United stay in their current position of fifth in the table, they can still make next season's Champions League by winning the Europa League.

Scholes believes that isn't too much to ask either.

“They are rightly the favourites," he added.

"They are by far the biggest club left in it and probably have the best squad.

"Lyon could potentially be the team they have to worry about and it is not going to be straightforward, but they have got a great chance of winning the Europa League."
