They say never go back and that, as far as life is concerned, proves pretty sound advice.

That is, unless you’re Manchester United of course. After all, the Red Devils ripped up the rulebook last summer when they re-signed Paul Pogba for a world record fee just five years after unloading him for relative pittance.

However, it appears that United’s campaign to recover their misjudged sales doesn’t end with Pogba. In fact, it has emerged that Jose Mourinho has his eyes on recapturing yet another ex-Red Devil and as soon as possible.

Man in form

The man in question? Michael Keane.

The Burnley defender has flourished since leaving Old Trafford in 2015 and has left the tumultuous years of loan spells behind him. As a result, he is being frequently rumored in association with some of the league’s biggest sides.

Burnley currently sit in a healthy 13th place and look almost certain to consolidate their place in the Premier League for the first time. Thanks in part to Keane; it looks set to be third time lucky for Sean Dyche’s men.

The 24-year-old has amassed an impressive 33 appearances in all competitions this season. It proves enough game time to utterly eclipse the mere five outings he was offered by United.

One of his most notable performances came away to Hull City. Despite having conceded a sloppy penalty, Keane scored to rescue a 1-1 draw and proved a defensive juggernaut throughout the entire 90 minutes.

For performances like these, the Burnley man has attracted great attention and even a call-up to the England squad. Caps against both Germany and Lithuania prove the perfect reward for his form this campaign.

United return?

It’s certainly proven form reminiscent of that of a top-class defender and a centre-back plying his trade in the top half of the table. In fact, a return to Manchester United could be on the cards.

According to the Daily Mail, Keane’s old club have emerged as front runners to snap up the new England international. It would, of course, see him follow in the footsteps of Pogba in leaving United, succeeding elsewhere and then returning.

This is despite the fact that Everton, Liverpool and Chelsea are all interested in the 24-year-old as well.

Nevertheless, Burnely could demand as much as £25 million if they’re to relinquish their prize defensive asset. If the Red Devils were to oblige, it would see them pay 10 times as much as they received for Keane in 2015.

Is the Englishman really worth that much after just one full season in the Premier League? Well, the Pogba case shows United are no strangers to throwing large sums of money at potential transfer risks.

Besides, with the long-term injury set backs to Phil Jones and Chris Smalling recently, Keane may become an increasingly wanted man by the week.

Given his history and affection for the Old Trafford-based club too, it may prove an offer he can’t refuse. It can only be hoped that any potential move doesn’t serve to stall his progress and Mourinho, for once, trusts his home-grown stars.
