Liverpool completed the double over Everton after a fine 3-1 win in the Merseyside derby this lunchtime. If looked like we were in for a contest when Matthew Pennington equalised for the Toffees following Sadio Mane’s opener. But goals from Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi put an end to Everton’s charge and Liverpool cruised to a comfortable victory at Anfield. The result lifts Jurgen Klopp’s side to third in the Premier League as they look to secure Champions League football for the first time. After a shaky start to 2017, Liverpool have now won four of their last six matches and, while first place might be out of reach, they are certainly major players in the battle for second place.

One negative - Mane's injury

The only negative was an injury to Mane. The Senegalese was forced off early in the second half after a collision with Leighton Baines that will almost certainly rule him out of Wednesday’s game against Bournemouth.

Klopp confirmed as much after the game.

“Today we played a really good game. Nearly everything was perfect, we win it, the performance was good [but] then we lose Sadio Mane,” Klopp said, per Liverpool’s website.

“When I saw him in the dressing room, it didn’t look like he’ll be ready for Wednesday.

“We will see, hopefully it’s not that serious, but of course it’s not nothing and that makes our life not easier, I would say.”

Celebrations

Still, Mane’s injury won’t prevent Liverpool supporters from celebrating this win tonight.

Any time Liverpool get one over Everton, their fans waste no time in rubbing it in.

And for poor Matthew Pennington, he bore the brunt of some jokes on social media.

Liverpool fans troll Pennington

Pennington was handed a surprise start by Ronald Koeman and he was in dreamland when he scored. Obviously, those celebrations were short lived.

And Liverpool fans dug a tweet up from Pennington from 2013 where he admitted he, ‘just got rinsed.’

It’s not clear what Pennington was referring to four years ago but it certainly applied to Everton today.

Unsurprisingly, the tweet has been deleted. We managed to take a screenshot, though.

Pennington's tweet:

Pennington has sent less than 200 tweets in the five years he’s been on Twitter, so finding the tweet wouldn’t have been too difficult.

But still, to think to search the 22-year-old’s feed? A bit odd, that.
