Jose Mourinho didn’t give Bastian Schweinsteiger much of a chance at Manchester United, did he?The legendary German was banished to the reserves and was even left out of the first-team photograph at the start of the season. The midfielder eventually forced his way back into first-team contention and made four appearances for the Red Devils, but he was always likely to leave this January if a suitable offer came in.And that suitable offer came from the United States with Chicago Fire making Schweinsteiger one of their marquee signings. And his career in the US got off to a rather comical start after an American journalist asked if the new signing could help Chicago Fire win the World Cup. The World Cup!?He probably won't achieve that in his time in the United States but Schweinsteiger didn’t really have long to settle into his new surroundings before he made his debut against Montreal Impact.Despite only starting one match all season, he was named in the starting line-up for Chicago Fire. And how did he mark his debut? With a goal, of course. The home side worked a short corner well and David Accam’s cross met the head of Schweinsteiger, who made no mistake from six yards.

Schweinsteiger's goal

Take a look:

Ironically, Schweinsteiger’s former club struggled to a 0-0 draw with West Brom at Old Trafford earlier in the day to damage their hopes of finishing in the top four.

Man Utd fans react

As a result, you can imagine how the United fans reacted on Twitter. Take a look, anyway:

After he left the club last week, Mourinho admitted that he has some regret over the way he treated the 32-year-old during his time at the Theatre of Dreams.

"Bastian is in the category of players that I feel sorry for something that I did to him," Mourinho said ahead of Saturday's clash with West Brom.

"I don't want to speak about him as a player, I don't want to speak about him as whether I would buy him or not to buy him. I want to speak about him as a professional."

Schweinsteiger’s goal means he’s now got two in his last two appearances, with him scoring in his last United match against Reading in the FA Cup fourth round.
