When Luke Shaw signed for Manchester United for £27 million back in the summer of 2014, the then 18-year-old was expected to be a mainstay in the side for the next decade or so.

However, less than three years later and it seems as though Shaw could well be on his way out of Old Trafford.

But where has it all gone wrong for the former Southampton player?

He had a relatively impressive debut season, playing 20 times in all competitions as Louis van Gaal’s side qualified for the Champions League.

But it was in a Champions League fixture that Shaw’s progression hit a massive setback in the following season.

Against PSV, Shaw suffered a double leg break in a challenge from Hector Moreno - an injury that limited him to just eight appearances last season.

And despite starting this season under Jose Mourinho brightly, the left-back is now very much out of favour.

Even though he’s seemingly fit, Shaw is failing to make the first-team squad. In fact, Shaw found himself watching United’s 0-0 draw with West Brom from the stands once again with 20-year-old Matthew Willock getting a place on the bench ahead of him.

You’ve got to feel sorry for Shaw who, at the age of 21, should really be starting to fulfil his potential.

Of course, Shaw isn’t the first player to be banished from the first-team by Mourinho. Just look at how the Portuguese boss treated Bastian Schweinsteiger this season.

What United players think of Shaw's treatment

But what do the United players think of how Mourinho is dealing with Shaw?

Well, according to Manchester Evening News, “some United players find Mourinho’s treatment of Shaw to be harsh”.

But that doesn't tell the full story because that’s only “some” of them. M.E.N go on to reveal what two other players have told them about Shaw’s behaviour.

One conceded the defender “just doesn't help himself,” while another one added: "He has done nothing to try and turn it around”.

Maybe we shouldn’t be questioning Mourinho’s judgment after all and start pointing fingers at Shaw.

Either way, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Shaw will be a United player come next season if Mourinho gets his way.
