The Merseyside Derby is regarded the ‘friendly derby’ but it was anything but on Saturday. There were a couple of nasty challenges during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Everton, with Ross Barkley certainly fortunate to remain on the pitch after a poor tackle on Dejan Lovren. And things weren’t particularly friendly on the touchline, either. While managers Jurgen Klopp and Ronaldo Koeman didn’t quite come to blows during the 90 minutes, there was certainly a war of words in the press conferences afterward. The Everton boss hit out at Klopp and the Liverpool coaching staff for the fuss they made whenever a foul was committed by the away side.“It's all about football but we don’t make a show from the bench like Liverpool. It's football - a hard and fair game,” he said.
"I don't like coaches from the bench the whole time shouting to referees and linesmen, making a big show about tackles.”But Klopp wasn’t having any of it.“He (Koeman) didn't say anything to me, we shook hands after the game. It's not my job to speak about him," he said.“My staff is fine, really good boys if you would meet them one time! They are involved in the game, don't ask for anything that is not right.“Sometimes we have the tinted glasses, but sometimes it is clear. In a game like this, we want to be hard, wanted all the players to leave the pitch without injuries."In truth, it was just two managers desperately wanting their team to succeed in a very important match. It’s what football is all about.

No place in football

But something also happened that has absolutely no place in football.

Liverpool fans were guilty of singing an unsavory song about Everton’s Seamus Coleman.

The right-back suffered a serious injury whilst playing for Ireland last week and will miss the remainder of the season.

While Klopp and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson penned a lovely message to Coleman in the matchday programme, a small number of Liverpool fans decided to start a sickening chant in a pub before kick-off.

Liverpool condemn the chants

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool have condemned the song.

Les Lawson, the chairman of the Merseyside branch of the Official Liverpool Supporters Club, was keen to emphasise that this was very much a minority of Liverpool fans and it certainly didn’t represent the entire fanbase.

"Straight away after the injury everyone was hoping he makes a speedy recovery. It was a horrific tackle," Lawson said.

"It can easily be one of your own players and you should never mock a player who gets hurt like that.

"The majority of Liverpool fans wish him well and hope he is back to playing again soon.

"I remember, despite what was claimed, that when Alan Smith broke his leg and was stretchered off at Anfield the whole ground stood and applauded him".
