Despite being on a hiatus from the UFC as he prepares to become a father in May, Conor McGregor is still aggressively pursuing a super fight with Floyd Mayweather inside of a boxing ring.

That’s been the talk of the town for months now, even though it doesn’t seem like we’re actually getting anywhere with it.

TARGETING MAYWEATHER

The unfortunate thing about all of that is the UFC is having to suffer, as they don’t have an active lightweight champion and their plan to work around that fell through too after Khabib Nurmagomedov pulled out just one day before he was scheduled to fight Tony Ferguson last month.

Back in November, UFC president Dana White suggested that the Notorious’ hiatus could last up to 10 months and if that’s the case, don’t expect to see him back inside of the Octagon by September or October – or even longer if he does somehow secure a bout with Mayweather.

Despite that, talk will continue in regards to the Irishman’s UFC plans as he’s too big of a star to ignore, while the organisation will also want to start booking some fights as he continues to draw criticism for not defending his titles.

There is a long list of names out there that would love a fight with McGregor, whether it’s for the title or for the bumper payday that comes with it and the latest to have thrown his name into the mix is Georges St-Pierre as he aims to meet McGregor in his final fight.

It doesn’t end there either; you have Jose Aldo always lurking in the hope of getting a rematch, Nate Diaz is an attractive option for their trilogy fight while Tyron Woodley is also an interesting prospect if McGregor would go for a third title.

LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

However, even though those fights would break pay-per-view records, current UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes the biggest fight possible the Notorious could get involved in is by facing the winner of The Eagle and El Cucuy, whenever they fight.

Speaking on his podcast, he said: “The real fight is the winner of Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“So, that’s the real fight as far as being a big challenge for Conor. And that can be a million-plus pay-per-view buys.

“Especially if you have that fight, or the better fight, financially, is another fight with Nate Diaz.”

Ferguson’s scheduled clash with the unbeaten Dagestani has already been scrapped three times, but both fighters are keen on trying to go for it one more time, whereas Rogan did mention last week that UFC can’t risk booking McGregor up against Nurmagomedov due to his health concerns.

Both would be huge tests for McGregor, but with very few Octagon updates from the Irishman’s camp, don’t expect it to happen this year.
