September is going to be an intriguing month for the sport of boxing, and not just because that’s the month that’s been rumoured for the potential super fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.

While talk of them fighting continues to heat up, other fights are quietly bubbling away in both boxing and the UFC and most of the focus is falling on Gennady Golovkin.

SEPTEMBER SHOWDOWN

Following his controversial decision victory over Daniel Jacobs, he now has multiple options ranging from a rematch with Miracle Man to a WBO middleweight clash with Billy Joe Saunders – while an even bigger showdown with Andre Ward has also bee rumoured.

However, the fight fans really want to see this year is between Triple G and Saul Alvarez.

Negotiations seem to be taking a lot longer than anticipated, with Golden Boy Promotions worried about the Kazakh’s ability to be a big draw.

We’ve seen this all too often between Golovkin and the red-haired Mexican, but the lack of progress doesn’t mean Canelo will remain inactive as another attractive option has emerged in the form of David Lemieux.

Boxing News 24 are speculating that this could be the case as Lemieux has the same promoter as Canelo, so it’s much easier to make a fight between the pair, plus it’s no secret that they tend to protect Canelo from the biggest threats and Golovkin is one of them – despite blasting Lemieux away himself in eight rounds in 2015.

CANELO VS. LEMIEUX?

They posted: “Lemieux being with Golden Boy makes a fight between him and Canelo a very tempting one for the Oscar De La Hoya-led company to make. It would be an in house fight for Golden Boy to put Lemieux in with Canelo. It would also be a safer fight for him than if they went ahead and put Canelo in with Golovkin.

“You have to realise that Canelo is Golden Boy’s No.1 money fighter right now. If Canelo gets blasted apart by Golovkin, which could very well happen, then Golden Boy could see his money-making ability greatly reduced.

“Look at Manny Pacquiao of Top Rank. He still hasn’t brought his pay-per-view numbers back from the point they were at before his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015.

“You can point some fingers at Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, who hasn’t matched him in compelling fights since the Mayweather loss.

“Nevertheless, Canelo could find himself in the same boat as Pacquiao with his PPV numbers dropping off if he gets knocked out badly by Golovkin in a one-sided fight. We don’t know for sure if Golovkin’s recent lacklustre performance against Daniel Jacobs was him fighting at half-speed or not in order to increase the chances of Golden Boy finally letting Canelo fight him.”

With Lemieux preparing to take on Marcos Reyes in May, it could very well set him up to take Golovkin’s place in a showdown with Canelo, even if it’s not the fight fans really want to see.
