If Everton had been offered a point ahead of their trip to Manchester United, they'd almost certainly have taken it.

That said, the feeling on the team bus leaving Old Trafford after the final whistle will have been one of bitter disappointment.

Phil Jagielka had given the Toffees the lead in the 22nd minute, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic finally levelled for the hosts with virtually the last kick of the game.

Ashley Williams was the guilty party for giving away the 94th-minute spot-kick.

Nevertheless, Everton fans will be divided over how much blame the centre-back should take for his handball and for the subsequent two dropped points.

First, there's the issue of Romelu Lukaku. Just days after making absolutely no impact on the Merseyside derby, the Belgian put in another nonchalant performance.

Disappointment for Everton

The 23-year-old then brazenly disrespected Williams - who is not only more experienced than him, but is also the club captain - by shushing him and pointing towards the tunnel after his team-mate had been sent off.

The question also has to be asked of why Williams handballed it like that.

Given Robles' poor goalkeeping for Divock Origi's goal in the defeat to Liverpool, perhaps the defender just didn't trust him to cover, even if the stopper was right behind him.

For most of Tuesday night's game, Robles had covered himself in glory.

Much like Everton as a whole, though, his evening suddenly collapsed with Ibrahimovic's spot-kick.

Robles' reaction was dangerous

It's understandable that the Spaniard wasn't best pleased, but there's no excusing what he did next.

Already on a yellow card, Robles decided to boot the ball into the crowd. Just moments after Williams had been sent off, it's hard to argue that the goalkeeper shouldn't have been given his marching orders too.

Skip to 1:09 to see his poor reaction:

That should explain Ibrahimovic's celebration. It initially looked like the Swede was just being triumphalist, but it could well be that he was responding to what Robles had just done.

Few people will blame the Everton players for showing their frustrations, but that's just not the way to go about it.
