The rumours can finally be put to bed after The Hardy Boyz finally made their highly anticipated return at WrestleMania 33 where they captured the RAW tag team championships. Some fans refused to believe the speculation which started months ago, after the duo left Impact Wrestling and signed a deal with Ring of Honor, which proved to be a short stint as their contracts expired the night before WrestleMania where they dropped their titles in a ladder match against The Young Bucks.

THE HARDY BOYZ RETURN

As you can expect, there’s an understandable sense of excitement surrounding their return, and a big part of that is because of the way Matt has been able to reinvent himself during his time away from WWE.

While Matt always had his loyal fans before his departure, it was clear that WWE viewed Jeff higher, and that’s shown by the level of success he’s had compared to his older brother.

Now, though, that seems to have changed a little as Matt’s broken gimmick has proven to work wonders for him, and made him a sought-after talent.

That gimmick is what fans are excited to see in WWE, but we’re yet to see that on television despite a few hints based on how he talks, the chants from fans, the commentators have mentioned ‘broken’ a couple of times too along with his general mannerisms – but fans may have to wait a while to see the full-blown broken gimmick in WWE, though.

BROKEN

Dave Meltzer was discussing the topic on the latest episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio, and made some interesting remarks on the broken gimmick and its involvement in the WWE.

He claimed that the dispute with Anthem – who own Impact Wrestling – still isn’t settled as they’re adamant in getting a percentage of the profits WWE makes from the broken gimmick.

Apparently, WWE isn’t going to get involved in the dispute at all, despite many thinking they’d happily take it to court and win relatively easily.

Meltzer claims they’re going to let it settle between the Hardys and Anthem as WWE doesn’t possess any evidence. It’s not like Anthem are stopping them from using it, they just want a slice of the pie and that’s what’s stopping WWE – money.

Plus, Vince doesn’t usually run with ideas or gimmicks that he or his company didn’t create.

It’ll certainly annoy the fans that want it in WWE, as there aren’t massive stumbling blocks to overcome regarding the use of the gimmick.

The main worry is that without the gimmick, fans don’t want their run to end up like The Dudley Boyz where the novelty wore off in a matter of months.

The company shouldn’t limit them to the tag team division either, as there are ways to reintroduce the broken gimmick should they opt to use it later, such as a bad break-up with his brother, or even being drafted to opposite shows.

So, while it’s great to see them back home, it could be a while before Matt introduces us to his Broken Universe.
