Goals from Morten Gamst Pedersen and Benni McCarthy gave Blackburn a 2-0 victory over Portsmouth and almost certainly assured them of top-flight survival.

Pedersen made the breakthrough in the 30th minute when he forced the ball home after goalkeeper David James failed to deal with Chris Samba's challenge.

McCarthy then sealed the win in the 58th minute, scoring from the penalty spot after Hermann Hreidarsson's handball.
