Lionel Messi is on the hunt for his fifth Champions League with Barcelona this year.

A fifth winner’s medal would move him one behind Paco Gento’s record of six European Cups, all of which he won at Real Madrid.

Barcelona are the bookmakers' favourites to win the tournament following their remarkable comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain last month.

The legacy of their turnaround - trailing 4-0 after the first leg and then needing to score three goals in the final seven minutes - will be tarnished somewhat if Barca don’t go on to win the competition.

But it won’t be easy for Luis Enrique’s side. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also in the quarter-finals and their last-eight tie against Juventus won’t be easy.

Barcelona beat the Italian giants 3-1 in the final in 2015. Messi didn’t score but he was influential in the semi-final victory over Bayern.

The Blaugrana won 3-0 at the Camp Nou in the first leg, with Messi scoring twice.

Bayern won the return leg 3-2 but it wasn’t enough.

Messi's second goal was brilliant

The game is most remembered for Messi’s second goal, when he put Jerome Boateng on skates before dinking the ball over Manuel Neuer.

It was a wholly humiliating night for Boateng. Messi literally made him look like a child.

But it’s often forgotten that Neuer singled out Messi before the contest, saying he intended to show the Argentinian “who’s boss”.

What Neuer said before the match

"I have a lot of respect for Messi and for everything that he has achieved. He is very humble," Neuer told L’Equipe, per Goal.

"But it's crucial to show authority when we meet on the pitch and show him who's boss. I did the same in the World Cup final and this worked out pretty well.

"We will be looking to do the same on Wednesday night. It is vital to obtain a position of dominance and instil respect.”

Match highlights

Messi’s respect for Bayern lasted 77 minutes. Then, he decided enough was enough and scored twice in four minutes.

And that’s why it’s best to keep Messi’s name off your lips, Manuel.
