Jesse Lingard put pen to paper on a new contract at Manchester United on Thursday that could be worth a staggering £100,000-per-week.Amidst a season where the 24-year-old has scored five goals and assisted a further three in all competitions, Jose Mourinho has seen fit to reward him with a bumper deal. His £100,000-per-week wages are subject to United qualifying for the Champions League, though, meaning his current weekly salary is £75,000 with scope for another raise.Upon extending his stay at Old Trafford to 2021, Lingard said: "Manchester United has always been a big part of my life. I have been with the club since the age of seven and I feel great pride every time I pull the shirt on."To have scored in two cup finals for my boyhood club were immensely proud moments for me and my family."As a team, we have already won a major trophy this season and I look forward to helping us win many more under this great manager."I would like to say a special thank you to the fans for the great support they have always given me and the team."However, there are some - and that's an understatement - United fans who are furious with how much Lingard's new contract is worth.
In the eyes of many, the England international, who is better known for dabbing than his football ability, isn't nearly good enough to warrant weekly wages of £100,000.
And perhaps they're right judging by the sheer amount of top-class players that now earn less than Lingard.
Here are 14 players who fit into that category:
Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal) - £90,000
Romelu Lukaku (Everton) - £80,000
Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich) - £77,000
Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich) - £77,000
Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham) - £75,000
Christian Eriksen (Tottenham) - £75,000
Kyle Walker (Tottenham) - £70,000
Kevin Trapp (Paris Saint-Germain) - £64,000
Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus) - £57,000
Casemiro (Real Madrid) - £50,000
Isco (Real Madrid) - £50,000
Marek Hamsik (Napoli) - £50,000
Paulo Dybala (Juventus) - £35,000
Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan) - £16,000
In all seriousness, how is Lingard earning more than any of those names? The fact he's on nearly triple Paulo Dybala's wages is outrageous.
Lingard certainly isn't complaining and it would seem Mourinho isn't either, with the Portuguese explaining the reason behind the new contract.
"Jesse has been with the club since the age of seven," he said. "He has good intelligence which, when combined with his energy and ability, makes for a player with a great future ahead of him.
"Jesse is a popular member of the squad and I am delighted he has signed a new contract."
