Gennady Golovkin is one of the top pound-for-pound boxers lacing them up, but his last bout against Daniel Jacobs has left some wondering about his future.

GGG has not announced what his next fight will be, but reports indicate he and his team have their hearts set on a big prizefight against Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez is set to battle Julio Caesar Chavez, Jr. on Cinco de Mayo weekend, however.

That's put Golovkin in a weird spot. At an undefeated 37-0, Golovkin has every right to a battle with Alvarez. The problem is the wait will be massive, leaving GGG opponent-less unless he settles for a smaller fight. Enter Billy Joe Saunders, WBO middleweight champion.

Saunders has been tweaking Golovkin's camp for some time now, trying to coax them into accepting a title unification fight as GGG awaits the big payday from a Canelo fight. His promoter, Frank Warren, joined iFL TV to discuss the Golovkin situation.

“I want to see Billy Joe Saunders get what he should be getting. He should’ve been fighting Golovkin. We want that fight, he wants that fight. You know, we had a contract there, sitting there, for the fight and it’s still sitting there on the table so we’ll have to see what happens," he said, via Bad Left Hook.

GGG is not known for ducking fights, so it seems strange that he's been mum on accepting this one. Golovkin even said he wanted to fight Saunders after defeating Jacobs, but it's yet to materialize. We may finally know why, thanks to Warren shedding some insight.

“Well [his camp's] saying at the moment, they’re saying that Golovkin’s injured. So we’ll wait and see where this is all going. But as far as I’m concerned we’ve agreed terms, so much so that we made an interim fight, we paid a guy to step aside to enable it all to happen," Warren said.

That's a huge revelation, and one that only leads to more questions. If GGG is injured, what could it be? How long has he been hurt? Could that have hampered him during the Jacobs fight?

There's a lot to consider if GGG is injured, and the flip side is this could simply be a stalling tactic as they keep his 37-0 record intact as they wait for a fight against Alvarez to materialize.

Chatter around Saunders-Golovkin will undoubtedly continue until there's a resolution, and it sounds like the two camps have a contract hashed out should GGG be ready to accept it.
