Manchester United had some wonderful free-kick takers under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Two, in particular, stand out above the rest: David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, many others also scored free-kicks for United during Ferguson’s 26-year spell at Old Trafford, including Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Denis Irwin.
In 2015, two years after his retirement, Ferguson hinted which of the aforementioned stars, in his opinion, was the best free-kick taker of the bunch.
"David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney would all stay after training to perfect their free-kicks,” he wrote in his book, Leading, per Manchester United’s official website.
"They would be religious about spending an extra 30 minutes trying to bend balls past the goalkeeper. That’s why Beckham became a master of taking free-kicks from between 25 and 30 yards from goal and Giggs from between 18 and 23 yards. Rooney was better closer to the penalty box.
"As for Ronaldo, he’d be able to score from free-kicks if he took them from behind the moon!"
Beckham was surely the best
Ronaldo did score some absolutely beautiful free-kicks for the Red Devils - his goal against Portsmouth is one of the best free-kicks of the Premier League era - although most United fans would probably name Beckham as the most consistent.
The retired England international, inspiration behind the 2002 film ‘Bend it Like Beckham’, was absolutely devastating from set-pieces and would score goals from all kinds of crazy angles.
Beckham's most bizarre free-kick was this one...
But unquestionably his strangest free-kick came back in August 2001.
United had a free-kick on the right-hand side of the box and both Beckham and Giggs shaped to shoot.
Everybody inside Villa Park, including Villa’s goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, expected either Beckham or Giggs to run over the ball and for the other to take the shot.
Nobody could have predicted what would happen next.
Both United stars ran up to the ball and appeared to take the free-kick together at the same time.
Incredibly, the subsequent shot was on target and Schmeichel was forced to make a one-handed save.
