Real Madrid are currently in action against their local rivals Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu, hoping to secure three points that would increase their chances of winning their first La Liga title since 2012.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who has only won one league title since joining Los Blancos from Manchester United in 2009, will have been acutely aware of the importance of picking up maximum points from this fixture.

The Portuguese superstar scored a hat-trick in the reverse fixture at the Vicente Calderon back in November and was busy again during the early stages of this afternoon’s match.

Before kick-off, however, there was a sweet moment involving Ronaldo and his young mascot.

The little girl was scared by the four-time Ballon d’Or winner - although to be fair to Ronaldo, it was entirely accidental.

The 32-year-old, after crossing the white line, let go of his mascot’s hand before jogging on the spot and jumping up high.

This startled the little girl who, fearing Ronaldo was about to land on her, quickly moved out the way.

Atletico can blow title race wide open

Victory for Real Madrid would see them extend their lead over second-placed Barcelona to five points.

Luis Enrique’s side face Malaga this evening.

An away win for Atletico, however, would blow the title race wide open.
