Memphis Depay's Lyon career has gone just as many Manchester United fans would have predicted.

With all due respect to Ligue 1, the Dutchman has obviously benefited from playing in a slightly weaker environment.

Since moving back to the continent, the winger has scored five goals, including a spectacular effort from the halfway line against Toulouse.

However, we've also witnessed some erratic performances from the 23-year-old.

Memphis has never quite looked like the finished article. Lyon have seen more glimpses of his talent than United ever did in his 18 months in England, but he's also been slammed for a couple of abysmal showings against Guingamp and St Etienne.

The problem with any player who was once hailed as the next Cristiano Ronaldo is that his every move is going to be scrutinised.

That said, the midfielder didn't help himself with his latest Instagram post.

As you can see, the image depicts a lion - the Lyon symbol - attacking a fish, which is the crest of Lorient, their opponents on Saturday.

This was even worse than Harry Kane's generic lion post last season, as that was simply meant to suggest that Spurs were still in the hunt for glory. Memphis mentioned a specific team, so it was absolutely vital that he and his team-mates gave a good account of themselves.

Lyon collapsed

Unfortunately, that didn't quite happen. Lorient ran out surprise 4-1 winners at the Stade des Lumières, despite starting the day third bottom of the league.

Lyon were actually leading until the 42nd minute courtesy of Corentin Tolisso's goal, which incidentally, Memphis set up.

That won't stop him feeling rather silly now, though, as quite a few fans went back to his post to leave derogatory comments.

"Dude what happened to the fish, it became a shark" read one.

"Whahahahahha 1-4" read a slightly less imaginative attempt.

Admittedly, Lyon don't have all that much to play for in the league. Bruno Genesio's men sit fourth, five points ahead of Bordeaux and consequently confident that they'll make the Europa League next season. They're also 14 points behind third-placed Paris Saint-Germain, so they have no real hope of pushing for the Champions League.

Defeat to Lorient in such an emphatic manner is disappointing nonetheless, so Memphis may want to think a little more carefully about his social media activity when his side look to salvage some pride in Europe against Besiktas on Thursday.
